West Bengal’s Murshidabad district Police have seized a large cache of illegal firearms and ammunition intended for smuggling into Bangladesh from Bihar, arresting four people, including a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) youth leader.
On Saturday, August 22, at a press conference, Murshidabad Superintendent of Police Sachin Makkar said TMC youth leader Papai Ghosh had been on the run since the post-election period due to his alleged involvement in multiple criminal activities. Following his recent arrest, Baharampur police interrogated him in custody and carried out a raid at his Baharampur residence on Friday.
The search at Ghosh’s house led to the recovery of seven illegal firearms, five magazines, and 170 rounds of ammunition, alongside the arrest of three associates. Based on further interrogation of the suspects, Shaktipur police conducted a follow-up operation in the Jalangi area, seizing an additional five pistols and 40 live cartridges.
According to the Superintendent of Police, preliminary questioning revealed that the weapons were procured from Bihar specifically to be smuggled across the border into Bangladesh.
Police noted that this is not an isolated incident, as multiple arms consignments headed for Bangladesh were intercepted earlier this month across Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas districts. On August 12, police seized seven 7mm pistols, ten empty magazines, and 35 live cartridges in Jiaganj, Murshidabad. Just a day later, on August 13, another 9mm pistol and two magazines were recovered near the Petrapole–Benapole border.
