The National Reconciliation Commission (NRC) has decided to hold meetings with experts to determine the methods and procedures for finalizing and implementing the July Accord. This decision was taken at a meeting on Wednesday at the Commission’s conference room in the National Parliament building, according to an official press release.
The press release stated that the Commission has already reviewed suggestions and recommendations received from political parties regarding the finalization and implementation of the Accord. Several parties submitted opinions even on the day of the meeting. Taking these inputs into account, the Commission decided to consult experts.
The meeting was attended by the Commission’s Vice-Chairman Prof. Ali Riaz, members Badiul Alam Majumdar, Justice M. Emdadul Haque, Safar Raj Hossain, and M. Ayub Mia, along with Monir Haidar, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor involved in the reconciliation process.
The Commission has already held informal discussions with 28 political parties regarding the July Accord, seeking their views on its implementation process and procedures. So far, 26 parties have submitted their opinions.
The NRC noted that under the current circumstances, if the implementation procedures are included as part of the July Accord, some parties might refuse to sign it. Additionally, the Commission’s mandate did not originally cover determining implementation methods.
On July 29, the NRC had provided 30 parties with an initial draft of the July Accord. Based on feedback, a “consolidated draft” was prepared and shared with the parties on August 16, with 29 political parties providing their responses so far.
