Leaders and activists of Gono Adhikar Parishad (GAP) staged a protest march and blocked roads on Wednesday afternoon, demanding justice for attacks on their leaders including Nurul Haque Nur, the resignation of the Home Affairs Advisor, and a ban on the politics of the National Party and the 14-party alliance. The demonstration began at 4:30 PM in front of GAP’s central office in Bijoynagar and continued with a road blockade at Paltan More for over an hour.
GAP General Secretary Rashed Khan said,
“Justice must be served for the attacks on Nurul Haque Nur and other leaders. This attack is not only against Nurul Haque Nur but against the people’s movement. Therefore, the Home Affairs Advisor must resign for this responsibility.”
He also described the Awami League and National Party as “parties of India,” urging that even the National Party should be treated similarly. Rashed Khan further demanded a ban on the National Party, stating, “The Awami League has been banned as a fascist party. The National Party and the 14-party alliance must also be banned.”
Speakers at the protest included GAP spokesperson Faruq Hasan, Senior Joint Secretary Hasan Al Mamun, senior council members Abu Hanif, Shakil Uzzaman, Sarkar Nur Ershad Siddiqui, Mahfuzur Rahman Khan, Robiul Hasan, Joint Secretary Ismail Ahmed, and Organizational Secretary Tofazzal, among others.
The protest comes after violent clashes on August 29 between supporters of the National Party and GAP, during which Nurul Haque Nur was injured by police and other law enforcement personnel, suffering a fractured jaw and nose and brain hemorrhage. He was admitted to the ICU at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later transferred to a cabin on September 1. On Tuesday, Nur’s wife Maria Nur, along with party leaders, met with Chief Advisor Prof. Muhammad Yunus, who instructed that Nur receive advanced treatment abroad.
