Historic 100-Year-Old Baul Festival in Sylhet Stopped After Attack and Vandalism

Baul Music Event in Sylhet Attacked, 100-Year Tradition Disrupted

A traditional Baul music gathering with a history of nearly 100 years was reportedly disrupted following an attack in Bishwanath Upazila of Sylhet.

The incident took place on Sunday night in Sripur village, near the shrine of Ibrahim Shah. A video of the incident began circulating on social media on Monday morning.

According to organizers, the Baul music event has been held annually at the Ibrahim Shah shrine for around a century. This year’s event, planned as a three-day program, was underway when a group of over a hundred people allegedly attacked the venue on the second night, halting the event.

Viral footage shows attackers storming the stage and vandalising musical instruments, sound equipment, and audience seating. The group was also seen chanting slogans before leaving the scene in a procession.

Following the incident, shrine caretaker Dudu Mia claimed the long-standing religious and cultural event was attacked without prior complaint. He further alleged that attackers later broke the windows of a nearby mosque in an attempt to blame shrine followers.

Speaking to the media, Bishwanath Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Gazi Mahbubur Rahman said police visited the scene immediately, and the situation is now under control. He noted that the event was being held outside the shrine premises, in a nearby open area, which had drawn objections from some locals.

The OC added that both sides have acknowledged their mistakes. Playing loud music late at night was inappropriate, he said, but attacking and disrupting the event was equally unacceptable. Efforts are underway to resolve the matter locally, and no case has been filed so far.
