Sergio Romero saving penalty in 2014 World Cup semi-final

Veteran Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39, bringing an end to a long and memorable career.

Romero is best remembered for his heroic performance in the 2014 FIFA World Cup semi-final, where he saved two penalties in a shootout against the Netherlands to send Argentina to the final. However, Argentina failed to lift the trophy, losing 1–0 to Germany in the final.

The former AS Monaco and Manchester United goalkeeper recently announced his retirement, having also missed the 2018 World Cup due to injury.

Despite stepping away from playing, Romero is not leaving football entirely. He has expressed a strong desire to pursue a coaching career, aiming to become a head coach rather than a goalkeeping coach. He has already begun assembling his own backroom staff in preparation for this new chapter.

Over the course of his club career, Romero represented several teams, including AZ Alkmaar, Sampdoria, Venezia FC, Boca Juniors, and Argentinos Juniors.

On the international stage, he enjoyed a distinguished career, earning 96 caps for the Argentina national team.
