Concern Over AI Misuse During Election Nights: CEC Warns

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin has expressed concern that misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) could increase during the upcoming national elections, especially at night.

He noted that AI misuse has become a global issue and could create risks to Bangladesh’s electoral process as well.

Speaking as the chief guest at a workshop on artificial intelligence held Tuesday (October 21) at the Election Training Institute in Agargaon, Dhaka, the CEC emphasized the need for constant vigilance. The workshop was organized under the “IDEA-2” project.

“Many things can happen at night during elections,” the CEC said. “The risk of AI misuse is particularly high at night. Therefore, we must work around the clock—24 hours a day. A central cell will be formed to monitor and control misinformation and disinformation. However, before doing so, we need your—experts’—opinions.”

He added, “We have to plan from now on what kind of personnel will be engaged in this task, through which mediums disinformation may spread, and how we can identify and deliver accurate information to the public promptly.”

The workshop was also attended by four Election Commissioners, the EC Secretary, and technology experts from various universities.
