The elusive “Subodh” graffiti series from Bangladesh has crossed the border into India, with a massive new artwork appearing on a highway wall in Sikkim In the midst of ongoing bilateral border tensions.
Discovered on June 30, the 20-foot-long stencil and spray-paint installation was spotted by residents on a wall at the Majhitar Nala Bridge along the strategic Gangtok-Rangpo Road.
The artwork depicts the iconic character Subodh with messy long hair and shoes, resting on a hammock tied between two strands of barbed wire. He holds a wire cutter in his right hand while his left hand dangles over a bucket placed directly underneath. The piece concludes with the artist’s signature question tag, “Hobeki?” (Will it happen?).
Local residents told journalists they noticed the fresh graffiti over the last few days. The character Subodh previously gained widespread attention after being painted across various walls in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.
The appearance of the political graffiti coincides with heightened tensions between New Delhi and Dhaka regarding the forced return of alleged undocumented Bangladeshi migrants across the border.
